73-Year-Old ID'd As Long Island Drowning Victim

Authorities have identified a drowning victim on Long Island.

The Southampton Town Police Department said it received an abandoned 911 call from the vicinity of Gibson Lane in Sagaponack at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.

Dispatchers were able to re-contact the caller who reported a man was missing in the water after going swimming at Gibson Beach. 

Southampton Town Police patrol officers, Marine Units, detectives, Bridgehampton FD and EMS responded to the area to search for the man.

He was located on the beach a short time later unresponsive.

CPR was started and he was transported by Bridgehampton Fire Department EMS to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a statement released Tuesday, Oct. 15, police identified the man as Robert De Vos Burchart, age 73, of Switzerland.
